Google Meet
Video calls help us talk with coworkers, teachers, and family. Google Meet puts those chats right on your phone, tablet, or computer. You get it for free to handle your daily conversations. And hosting up to 100 people in one room for a full hour costs nothing.
What the Google Meet app does
It connects right to the Google account you already use. No new password needed if you already have Gmail. It simply uses your internet or phone data to make the call.
You get a few handy tools during a chat. You can turn on captions to read what people are saying. This saves the day when your house is loud. The app also filters out background noise. You can even type in the chat box so you do not talk over anyone.
Top features for your calls
Every room comes with standard options.
- Clear video: Camera reaches 1080p on a fast connection. It drops the quality on its own to keep the call going if your internet slows down.
- Screen sharing: Show your whole screen or just one tab. Useful when the group needs to check a document together.
- AI help: Google put Gemini AI into the app recently. Paid Workspace accounts get the AI note-taking. It writes a summary email after the call and can drop action items into your task list.
- Strong security: Every call gets encrypted by Google. And recently, they started adding post-quantum cryptography to protect calls against future threats.
- Meeting controls: The person who creates the room runs it. You can mute people, cut their video, or kick them out.
How to make a call
Setting up a room is quick.
- Open the application and sign in with your Google email.
- Tap the "New" button to start a blank meeting.
- Copy the link on your screen and message it to your group.
- Wait for people to click the link. Click "Admit" on your screen to let them into the call.
If someone else invited you, you can just click the link they provided. The application will open immediately. You always get a preview screen to check your camera and microphone before you enter the room.
Settings you should check
You control what others see on camera. You can hide a messy room with a background blur before you join. You can also swap your background for a picture of an office or a forest.
During the call, you just tap the buttons on the screen to mute yourself. The microphone icon mutes your audio. The camera icon turns off your video feed. You can tap the hand icon if you have a question. But remember to lower it after you speak.
You can turn on the data-saving mode in the Google Meet app settings if you need to save your phone battery.
